Dion and Mount Olympus from Thessaloniki: day trip, train or private?

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

A thin waterfall dropping over grey rock into a green pool in a wooded gorge

The answer first. For most visitors the Dion and Mount Olympus Park day trip is the right start. It costs €49.30 per person, runs 10 hours and has 4.6 stars from 1,292 reviews. Choose a private trip only if you want a custom pace, and the train trip only if you like trains more than coaches.

The private tours have very few reviews. Their ratings say little yet.

What you actually see

Dion was a sanctuary of Zeus and a sacred city of the ancient Macedonians. Today it is an archaeological park with a museum for the finds. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece, at 2,918 m, but the listings describe a trek in the national park and not a summit climb. Litochoro, the village at the foot of the mountain, is the starting point for many walks, including the Enipeas Gorge. Only the €550 private tour names the gorge, so if it matters to you, ask before booking which walk is included and how long it takes.

What to check on the booking page

How long the walk is, and whether the swim stop at Agia Kori’s stream is part of the day you travel. Whether the entrance fees to Dion and any other sites are included. For the train trip, the start and return times, because 10 to 13 hours is a wide window. Wear sturdy shoes: this is a walking day.

Why a tour and not a day on your own

Dion, Litochoro and the park are spread across Pieria, and getting between them without a car eats the day. The group trip solves that for €49.30. If you would rather drive yourself, plan real time at Dion and a proper walk, not a drive-by.

Who should skip it

If you only have a day and care about ancient Macedonia more than hiking, Vergina and Pella has more archaeology for the same price. If you are looking for a hard Olympus ascent, a day trip from the city is not the way to do it.

Our recommendation

Book the Dion and Mount Olympus Park day trip for most trips. It has by far the most reviews and the lowest price. All options are on the Mount Olympus and Dion page.
