Hiring a car in Thessaloniki: what do excess and deposit mean?
Updated October 19, 2026 · 5 min read
The answer first: the cheapest-looking car is not necessarily the cheapest rental. Before paying, open the rental conditions and find the excess, security deposit, accepted payment card, fuel policy, mileage allowance and charges for an additional driver or late collection. Those fields determine what must be available at the desk and what you may still pay after damage. If a condition is missing or unclear, ask the rental company before booking rather than guessing from the headline price.
Excess and CDW are not the same promise
The excess is the amount for which you may remain responsible under the rental agreement if covered damage occurs. Collision Damage Waiver, usually shortened to CDW, limits liability under stated conditions; it does not automatically mean that every part of the car and every event is covered. Glass, tyres, the underside, keys, incorrect fuel and breaches of the agreement may be treated separately. The booking terms, not the label “full protection”, decide.
Third-party protection sold by a booking platform can also work differently from a waiver supplied by the rental company. With reimbursement cover, the desk may still block a deposit and charge you first; you then submit documents for repayment. Read who handles a claim and which documents they require.
What the deposit does
The deposit is a temporary security hold or charge used by the rental company. It is not the same as the excess, and the two figures need not match. The amount and release process vary by offer, vehicle and payment method, so this article cannot give one honest Thessaloniki figure.
Check the required card type, whose name must be on it and whether its available limit comfortably covers the hold. A debit card accepted for online payment is not necessarily accepted for the deposit at the desk. Also ask your bank how a pre-authorisation affects your available balance and how long a released hold may take to disappear.

The charges people miss
Fuel terms change the final bill. “Full to full” means returning the car with the agreed fuel level; another policy may include prepaid fuel or a refuelling service charge. Photograph the gauge and receipt if the return depends on them. Check mileage limits if you intend to drive to Meteora or make several long day trips.
An additional driver, a child seat, collection outside desk hours, a one-way return and a young-driver condition can each alter the total. Minimum-age and licence-holding requirements differ between companies and vehicle groups. The correct limits are the ones shown for your selected offer, not a general number copied from another rental.
At the Thessaloniki desk
Bring the licence and identity documents named in the voucher, plus the accepted card in the required name. Before leaving, walk around the car in good light. Record every visible mark, the wheels, glass, fuel level and dashboard mileage, and make sure the rental agent adds missing damage to the report. Keep the collection and return records.
If the desk proposes extra cover, ask what it changes: the excess, excluded parts, the deposit, or only the claims process. Decline or accept it only after comparing that answer with protection already bought. Pressure at the counter is not a reason to sign a term you do not understand.
What to book
Choose the offer whose deposit you can meet, whose excess you understand and whose collection hours match your flight. A slightly higher displayed rate can be the better buy when it avoids an unsuitable fuel rule or an unmanageable card hold. Compare the complete terms for Thessaloniki cars, save the conditions with your voucher, and recheck them before travel.
